Clearing some branches for weed control
The bottom foot or so of low branches can be removed in the second year to allow for weed control. Some lower branches can also be removed as shown as the tree gains caliper and no longer needs these branches. When the amount of branches below the permanent nursery canopy represents less than about 10% of the foliage on the tree, all of them can probably be removed provided the tree has enough caliper to hold itself up.
