Irrigation affects root ball density
Trees in the center of this photo received irrigation only over the soil that will be dug with the tree. Those on the right received the same amount of irrigation over a six foot diameter soil area centered on the trunk. Trees on the left received no irrigation. Concentrating the irrigation over the soil that eventually became the root appeared to increase root density oin the root ball.
