Root system: growing quality
Growing quality trees begins with picking and planting good liners, and establishes procedures that result in a well structured root system with minimum root defects (See: root defects). Roots should be more or less straight growing radially away from the trunk. Root system quality is diminished when roots circle, dive, grow up the container wall, or kink to grow back toward the trunk. There are new and established techniques developed and used by growers and researchers that result in great root systems.
