roots growing over main flare roots on maple

Roots on this maple grew over the main structural flare roots after bouncing off the container walls. This root defect (roots over the flare) is encouraged by planting deeply each time tree is shifter from one container size to another. This tree was planted into a 3 gallon container with the point where the top-most emerged from the trunk 2.5 inched deep, and then again 2.5 inches deep into the 15 gallon container.
