Overview of year one

(Click on photographs for more information-suggest starting with 1)

The main objective in the first year is to develop a sturdy trunk and root system. Cut back upright growing branches that compete with the leader, retain but reduce length of long low branches, and control foliage diseases and insects if they will stunt growth. Staking may be needed to develop an upright or straight trunk.
