Shaving results in straight lateral roots with few defects
Shaving periphery of liner root ball. A glance at the root ball below 10 months later shows that roots grew more or less straight from the cut ends of severed roots.
Here is the tree 10 months after it was shifted to this one gallon container. Note that roots are growing laterally and vertically. This is a nice balanced root system that should have the capacity to adapt to urban landscapes. Research in underway to test this (April 2010).
