root growth from containers

Nursery production method appears to influence root depth. This oak was planted from a 30 gallon container five years ago in USDA hardiness zone 8. The tree pictured here was turned up-side-down. More roots were emerging from the bottom portion of the container than from the top compared to B&B trees. This resulted in a greater portion of the root system at the deeper soil depths.
