Tap root was deflected in propagation tray and grew larger
Here is the tree one year after it was shifted to this one gallon container. Note the prominent tap root circling around in the same position it was in when it grew in the propagation container. If you drag this window and place the photo next to the younger root system you will see that none of the tiny roots on the tap root developed into main lateral roots. This appears to be common on many species.
