One year later
Here is the tree one year after it was shifted to a one gallon container with the sides and bottom made of 90% air and 10% plastic. Note the abundance of lateral roots that were forced to grow horizontally without deflection because they branched instead of deflecting at the edge of the Elle pot propagation container. These laterals continued to grow horizontally in the one gallon container because the one gallon container discouraged downward growth. The tree adapted by forcing more lateral roots to grow larger. Therefore, root system above was developed by a combination of air pruning tap and lateral roots in the propagation container and the air pruning characteristics of the one gallon container.
