a stem can be cut off at ground level

A stem or group of stems can be cut off at ground level (if plants are on their own roots), or above the graft or bud point (for grafted and budded plants), to initiate vigorous upright stems. This can be a good way to produce a multi-trunked plant. If all stems are removed now except for one, then the one stem can be trained into a dominant trunk. Growth is rapid and straight.
