Reduce competing stems

reduce competing stems illustration

Do not allow branches opposite each other to grow large. Aggressive opposite branches can steal resources from the leader. As a result, growth in the leader often slows down. Cut back, using a reduction cut, those stems that compete with the leader and those that are large, especially if they are growing opposite each other.
