Before pruning

No branches need pruning in the lower 5 feet of the tree because none are too long. There are three branches clustered together on the right side of the middle canopy. The lower of these three will become the bottom of the permanent nursery canopy. Only one large branch should be positioned at this point. Several codominant stems will develop if pruning is not performed at this time.

Two of the three branches clustered together on the right side of the canopy were shortened dramatically. Sprouts will grow from these to help fill this portion of the canopy. The third branch was shortened lightly and will become the lowest permanent branch at this point on the tree. The second major branch on the tree is located about 16 inches higher on the left side of the tree. Trees with alternating major branches like this look great and represent quality.
