Before pruning, there are several stems growing from one point on the trunk about four feet from the ground.

All but one was cut back using a heading cut. Heading cuts are quick and efficient to execute with hand pruners or hedge shears. Now one leader dominates the structure of the tree. This is a good form on a young one year old shade tree.
