wood

Wood is made up of living and dead cells. Together these hold the tree up, store resources, and transport water and sugars. It is important for the components of wood including vessels, companion cells, fibers, and parenchyma cells to operate properly.

When trees are stressed or injured trees react and portions of the wood can malfunction. This can lead to problems for the tree. See: an in-depth look inside wood biology and how it functions.
