Trunk cracked to the ground

tree cracked to ground

This mature tree was damaged in an ice storm. One codominant stem broke from the tree resulting in a split in the trunk to the ground. The photo shows the damage in the top of the tree.

Treatment: Maintain the tree in a healthy condition by chemically removing grass from under the canopy. Apply a 3 inch thick layer of mulch under the canopy to encourage root growth. Bracing the tree together with rods will help keep the tree together and could extend the service life of the tree. Consider reducing the remaining branches once the tree recovers a large portion of its foliage in a few years.
