tree grate with flowers

There are many clever ways to maintain trees once planted in urban locations. One is to plant flowers at the base of the tree. Folks are more likely to realize that the flowers need water than the trees. When the flowers receive water, so will the trees.

Be sure to implement a maintenance program to expand then remove the grate as the trunk grows larger. Alternatives to grates include mulch, stones, low 6 inch tall fence, a low wall, modular paver, and curbs around a connected planter.
