Tree grates in downtown landscapes
Tree grates (arrow) have been used for many decades around the base of trees in downtown business districts. They are designed to present a level surface to pedestrians and support their weight while preventing soil compaction around the trunk. They also keep the soil, mulch, or gravel that is traditionally placed around the base of downtown tree trunks from exiting the space around the trunk.
They are not designed to be used in sustainable landscapes; they are a short term solution for landscapes meant to be replaced about every 15 to 20 years.
