Large branches below the lowest scaffold limb were shortened (dotted lines) to prevent them from becoming part of the permanent canopy and three were removed. A reduction cut also made on upright stems in the upper canopy. This pruning combination forces growth into the one leader than was not cut in the center of the tree. A good, strong structure develops as a result of this program conducted over a period of 25 years.
