arborist cutting tree

After pruning, the limb is shorter. This redistributed weight closer to the trunk. Many trees do this on their own as wind and gravity breaks branches at the edge of mature canopies. This might be a mechaism trees use to increase life span - break branches instead of breaking the entire tree. Subordination or reduction of long limbs shortens branches in a more controlled fashion than breakage.
