Trunk cracks
Cracks in the trunk and branches represent a weakness in the tree. This can lead to tree breakage and failure. Cracks can arise from bark inclusions, codominant stems, improper pruning cuts, root injury, storm damage, an unbalanced tree canopy, and other causes. At least some of this can be prevented with appropriate pruning.
