Wind causes internal defects and die-back
Strong wind causes defoliation and die-back (see photo below), and branches and trunk can bend excessively (see right photo). This can obviously cause breakage under certain circumstances, but more subtle damage can also occur. Cracks can form and bark can separate from the wood. Both types of damage are difficult to detect. See: more information
