Slicing the root ball reduces circling roots

This root ball was sliced from top to bottom from one arrow to the other six months ago and then excavated as shown here. New roots grew into the backfill soil from the slice. Few roots grew from the areas of the root ball between the slices. View research abstract. We think shaving off the outer periphery of the root ball is the best method of removing roots at the edge of the root ball.
