Roots growing up and into mulch
Roots grow up and into mulch that is placed against the trunk and on the root ball. This can cause roots to grow close to the trunk causing trunk girdling, decline and tree dead. For this reason it is best to keep mulch well away from the trunk. See: trunk girdling
