Wire engulfed by maple
This tree died and was planted with the wire basket intact; the roots appear to have completely engulfed the wire without difficulty. Because this tree died and happened to have a basket on it does not mean that the wire caused the tree to die.
Remember that many factors are responsible for tree death. Before condemning wire baskets, we need scientific documentation that most trees are unable to engulf the wire and grow on without difficulty. We currently lack that evidence (2002). The next photograph shows a cross section through the root system.
