Main horizontal roots should be growing more or less straight from the trunk as shown above. They typically grow close to the soil surface and divide or branch into smaller roots within about four feet from the trunk. Removing soil from the root flare area with an air spade or by some other non-invasive means can reveal defects. No defects can be seen in this photograph.
