root ball from well-drained soil

Trees in the nursery often have a number of roots growing straight down under the trunk. Note that there are several deep roots on this tree. As trees grow older in the nursery, there is an abundance of small diameter fine roots growing from many main lateral roots close to the soil surface. Oblique roots are those that grow down at an angle.
