Roots are shown growing under the barrier. The trees were about 3 feet to the left and upper edge of the photograph. The barrier was removed. The three roots marked with arrows reached the barrier, grew under it, and then grew up toward the soil surface.
Most of the other roots in this photo grew up at a shallower angle. The next photo will show the entire view of the root system. The water table in this site fluctuated between 12 and 48 inches under the surface during the year.
