Regulations
There may be municipal, county, and/or state regulations that affect how close a tree can be planted to a street, intersection, traffic light, or other structure or piece of property. These typically regulate tree planting along rights-of-way and on other property controlled by a government.
State departments of transportation might prohibit planting trees that mature over a certain size along thoroughfares with certain speed limits and curb configurations. Regulations vary. Always check them before planting along a road maintained by a department of transportation.
Communities are beginning to set guidelines or regulations against planting certain tree species. Many of these come about due to the invasive nature of some non-native trees.
Unfortunately, a few communities have developed or are considering approved tree lists. Only trees on the list can be planted. This is not a wise course of action because it limits choice and discourages learning.
