drastic pruning on tree

This tree was pruned a couple of months ago to lift the canopy. The tree was growing into the building and onto the vehicles below. It had never been pruned before so the canopy almost reached the ground and the tree had several large trunks originating from about the same position on the trunk. About half the foliage was removed along with several very large limbs. If the tree was pruned every 5 years or so instead of waiting 20 years, less drastic pruning would have been required. Now the tree has a weak, multi-trunked form and enormous pruning wounds near the base. Click to the next photo for a close-up view.
