Poor structure develops without pruning at planting

Trees should be pruned at planting (as shown in the top right photo) if there are correctable defects present. The correctable defect here on the young planted tree (top left) is several large stems competing with the leader. Follow the growth of this tree through 70 years in photos below.

10 years - three codominant stems

15 years - weak form with all stems originating from same point

30 years - weaker form

60 years - broken tree is removed
