Circling on top of main roots

circling root illustration

A circling root is growing above the point where the top-most root in the root ball emerges from the trunk. This circling root should be removed when the tree is potted to a larger size, or when the tree is planted into the landscape. This problem can be reduced by positioning the point where the top-most root meets the trunk just under the surface when potting the plant.
