Plant high in compacted or poorly drained soil

trees planted high in compacted soil

Provided the point where the top-most root emerges from the trunk is immediately below the mulch, this is appropriate planting when soil aeration is poor. About 12 inches of the root ball is above the surrounding landscape soil grade. This allows the roots in the ball access to vital oxygen during establishment. If the top-most root were even with the surrounding landscape soil in this photo, the root ball would be planted way too deep.
