Locate collar before making removal cut

The correct way to remove a branch from the trunk is to cut just outside the edge of the swollen branch collar (left). Cutting through the collar (right) removes an important decay defense mechanism called the branch protection zone. This zone is located inside the collar. This type of cut has been called a removal cut because it removes a branch from the trunk.
