Leaf spots
Spots on leaves are usually not a problem for well-established and mature trees. No treatment of any kind is necessary in most instances. Under certain circumstances, they can be troublesome for nursery operators and others managing young trees.
Fungi, bacteria, and algae cause most spots. These diseases usually do not grow to become major problems. Control usually consists of spraying a chemical that provides protection for further infection. Chemical sprays will not rid leaves of existing spots. They only provide uninfected portions of leaves with some protection against further infection.
Spots can also be caused by nutrient deficiencies (see photo). See: diagnosing nutrient deficiency symptoms.
