young quality tree

Young, high-quality trees can have small temporary branches along the lower trunk as shown above. These low branches help the root system grow, help prevent trunk injury by forming a barrier from mechanical injury, and help development on the lower trunk. All branches below the wire in the photo can be removed once the tree is established in the landscape. The problem with marketing these trees to the public is most customers do not undersand that this is a fine form on young shade trees. Most insist on removing these before planting. Education is an endless job for all of us.
