Sidewalk cutouts without tree gratesgrate around tree

Tree grates can kill trees. For that reason Manhattan and other communities have discouraged their use. This is a good idea.

There are many ways to install trees in sidewalk cutouts. Some are shown in the series of photographs below. Paver blocks can make for a walking surface and can be removed easily as the tree grows. Some maintenance needs to be done to ensure roots do not engulf the blocks.
