Deciduous versus evergreen
Deciduous trees are often planted in downtown urban sites in northern landscapes so the sun shines through in winter to warm the sidewalk and pavement. This helps keep pedestrians more comfortable.
The same type site in warm climates often is planted with evergreen trees to provide year round shade. Many citizens in Florida, California and other warm climates prefer or even demand a year-round canopy.
