Evaluate maintenance practices
Understanding how the site will be managed following planting is a critical factor in tree selection. Maintenance issues such as irrigation, pruning, fertilization, and pest control will affect whether the tree is able to thrive in its environment. For example, if the planner knows ahead of time that the trees will not receive any pruning once they are in the landscape, then a specimen with a naturally good structure is the preferred choice. The links below provide information on selecting trees with consideration to the care they will receive in the landscape.
