Dropping leaves
The most obvious reason for leaf drop is dormant season shedding. This occurs on most deciduous trees in fall or winter. Some trees in dry climates do this in the normal summer dry season. Some trees turn bright colors during this process.
Leaves drop at other times of the year for numerous reasons including the following:
- leaves are covered with numerous leaf spots caused by fungi, bacteria or algae
- water was cut off from the foliage for many different reasons including vascular plugging with wilt fungi, root damage, drought, flooding, trunk girdling
- insects are infesting the leaves
- damage from herbicides applied to soil or landing on foliage
- over-fertilization
- lightning damage
