Placement of sidewalk cutouts

Cutouts should be placed along streets and sidewalks so as to minimize damage from buses, trucks, cars, and pedestrians (see position "A" below). Improperly placed cutouts (position "B") can put the tree in the path of pedestrians. Opening car doors can hit the trunks of improperly placed trees.

This often leads to mechanical trunk damage and can shorten the life of a tree that is already under stress from other unsuitable conditions in the cutout. Coordination among various government departments and contractors is needed to design and locate cutous properly.
