Canopy density
A dense canopy may prevent grass from growing in the shaded area. Trees with dense canopies cast more shade and make the best screens. Those with thin canopies allow enough light penetration for grass growth near the tree. There is no evidence that denser trees buffer noise better than trees with an open canopy. In fact there is no evidence that vegetation buffers noise at all. The apparent affects are probably a result of the visual screen provided by plants.
The shade provided by trees in urban landscapes is invaluable to the pedestrians below during warm seasons. The reduced air conditioning bills for the buildings nearby is further incentive for good planning, which may allow the trees to grow to maturity and live long in the landscape.
