Few can manage a landscape like this, but it illustrates a point. For successful tree establishment, the wider the mulched area the better. Note that the mulched area is wider than twice the height of the tree. Roots will be able to freely penetrate the soil beneath the mulch. This will dramatically aid establishment. No more than a 3-inch deep layer is needed.
