Roots deflected or turned abruptly

deflected roots Root systems that develop main roots out in all directions have a good connection with the soil and are relatively stable (right photo). Deflected roots that make an abrupt turn can make the tree unstable but this defect often remains undetected without a root collar excavation (photo below).

Treatment: If root excavations reveal a root system like the one below and there are few roots on this side of the tree, consider keeping the tree canopy small with regular reduction or thinning. This can reduce the likelihood of the tree falling over.
