Root collar exam and treatments

root collarRoot failure is responsible for many tree blow downs in storms. Roots rotted by Phytophthora or Armillaria can not hold the tree erect in wind (See: Phytophthora or Armillaria). Examine the root collar (the place where main roots meet trunk) carefully as part of a regular tree maintenance program near buildings, parks, streets, and other places where people live, play, and work. The best way to examine the root collar is with an Airspade or Supersonic Air Knife. See photo above for a view of the root collar. Look for the following items:
