roots destroy pavement

Roots damage pavement when allowed to grow under it. Note the lines of raised asphalt coming from the curb. Roots from the tree on the left grew under the curb, grew up toward the surface, and are proliferating directly under the pavement. This is common because this is where oxygen and moisture is present. The deeper soil is poorly aerated because it was compacted to support the pavement and vehicles so there are few roots there.
