roots in small pits

Trees with roots that can not escape the small planting pits often grow poorly. Roots on the trees pictured above were able to escape the small soil area under the iron tree grates and grow into the soil beneath the turf on the left. Without a specially designed system, roots could lift the sidewalk as they grow aggressively under the walk.
