Before pruning

Lower branches were reduced slightly in length using heading cuts. There are several upright stems growing too close to the leader and they are competing with it.

 

After pruning

All but one was cut back using a heading cut. Heading cuts are quick and efficient to execute with hand pruners or hedge shears. Now one leader dominates the structure of the tree. This is a good form on a young one year old shade tree.
