A close up of the previous photo shows that a large portion of the root system was apparently protected during construction. Be sure soil is not removed from the root zone prior to laying the sub-base and the pavers because this would remove a large portion of the root system.
This photo shows what happens when some of the construction detail was left to chance. Note the huge damage to the trunk on the tree in the forground. Great efforts were made to design a reasonable solution to save the trees and this tree was damaged beyond repair.
