large trees in small islands

Occasionally trees can grow in places that seem to defy reason. In the parking lot pictured above trees were able to explore the soil below the pavement and become quite large in relation to the tiny soil space at the base of the trunk.

These examples should not be used as models for successful design since they are so atypical. This parking lot in southern California was constructed over a gravely, alluvial soil type.
