Decay from a large cut
Huge cuts on the lower trunk can result in huge columns of decay inside the tree. In the photo above, note the decay inside the trunk behind the large cut made several years ago. The decay appears to have extended all the way to the root system judging by the opening at the trunk base. Avoid large pruning cuts by pruning trees regularly.
